Forgiving Yourself and Others (A Devotional)

Written By, Crystal S Kauffman

Have you struggled with forgiving someone, who has hurt you or abused you? Do you find yourself thinking about it a lot lately? If so, this is normal to feel, whenever someone you trust has intentionally hurt you. However, you must find a way to give your hurt and pain to the Lord, for he will release you of the burden of guilt. Then, he will help you learn how to forgive those, who have victimized you or someone you love.

The first memory verse is: Acts 3:19…“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” (KJV)

As you recite this verse, remember that you must confess all of your sins against God and others. Once you ask him to forgive you for all of your sins, he is just and will erase all of your sins immediately. For we must spend time, learning exactly what forgiveness truly is, because it can hinder your spiritual growth. Honestly, forgiveness is ceasing to be angry over unacceptable behaviors that have affected you.

By forgiving someone, you are not giving them your permission to repeat the behaviors that hurt you. Instead, you should recognize the feelings that you feel, since these emotions are only going to cause you pain. Be honest and ask for the forgiveness of others, once you have evaluated your role in the entire situation. This way, you can free yourself, from the burden of bitterness and anger that can lead to depression.

The second memory verse is 1 John 1:9…“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (KJV)

Recite this verse, as you begin your transitional journey from being a victim to becoming a survivor. No matter what has happened in the past, you can fully overcome its negative effect on your life. However, you must forgive others also, for the pain and anguish or their behaviors or actions to stop. But, by allowing the offender to receive mercy, you are becoming worthy of God’s complete forgiveness.

No longer will you receive condemnation, instead you will find peace that passes all understanding. In that moment, you will feel the burden of your guilt start melt away as the anguish disappears. Suddenly, all of your past iniquities will be washed away and fully forgotten by your heavenly father. Therefore, you will become a new creature in Christ, who is totally blameless and spotless before God.

Don’t Ring That Bell

My Uncle once told me that, “Sometimes our words ring a bell when we speak them out loud!”

An unbearable amount of pain can come from someone words, especially when they can literally cut a person’s heart to pieces. Sometimes, people are dealing with things that you may not know about, so be kind when you speak. Lately, I have been trying to watch my own mouth and not say mean things to anyone, since I have been trying to get right with God. However, some days I fail too and my anger erupts like a volcano and I am saying stuff I completely regret.

Do not say something if you don’t mean it, since not everyone will forgive you for the mean things you have said. Everyone can be very mean with their words, but you must change the way you react when you are angry at a person. Try to be quiet and say a prayer, whenever someone seems to be pushing all the right buttons and your anger is swelling. Take a deep breath or listen to your favorite music, which may help you calm down.

Don’t say something that you cannot take back, just because you are angry and someone is relentless and is constantly pushing you to your limit. The anger swells like the lava in a volcano and before long you are spewing venom from your lips. Instead, offer a prayer of forgiveness and try to get away from the person who brings the contempt out of you. Honestly, don’t let your anger cause you to say things that you will one day end up regretting for the rest of your life.

I always try to remember what my Uncle always said when he was alive, “Don’t Ring That Bell, Christy!”

On The Road to Recovery

Ok, everything you; once loved or cared about is gone! Are you going to lay in bed and cry, while the rest of the world moves on without you? Sometimes, through our bad choices in life we become toxic to others and they decide to remove themselves from our lives to save their own sanity, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t love you anymore.

It just means, you need to focus on making better choices and rebuilding a lifestyle that others can accept. Start, by figuring out “WHO YOU TRULY ARE!” underneath the pain and shame, that covers your heart like a thick winter coat. You have you to peel back each layer of guilt, in order to find the frightened child that you abandoned so long ago.

Now, you will need to make two notebooks with simple section dividers and papers. Make each each notebook a different color and keep them near your sitting area, because you will be writing in them a lot. Look in your kitchen cabinet for a simple coffee cup to place a couple pens in, just in case you have a thought and you need to find a pen quickly.

Start, by setting daily goals in one notebook like: remembering to take your medicine or cleaning your house. Write stuff that can be achieved from the time that the sun rises in the morning until the sun sets in the evening. Next, you will create weekly goals, monthly goals, and yearly goals. Then, use your second notebook to begin in journaling your thoughts like in a journal or diary.

Unfortunately, you have to accept that your life has violently changed and that it will never be the same as it was. Your spouse or children may never comeback, but if you feel lonely and depressed all the time. Look into adopting a pet from a local shelter that needs you, but are you a cat or a dog person. Yes, there is a major difference, since a cat requires little care and a dog requires constant supervision.

However, you must be a responsible person to own a pet, because they are like children and do require daily care. You can go to an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or (NA) Narcotic Anonymous meetings or church, in order to find friends that will support you on your journey to recovery. Don’t discouraged if you fail, because your loved one will notice that you are at least out there trying to change.

Whatever you do, just do ii! The hardest step is the first one and each step gets easier as long as you are moving. Find out what your problem and seek treatment, while creating new friends and new places to hang out. Don’t go back to what broke you and don’t invite more drama into your life.

Why Did God Create You?

Jesus is there

Many people wonder why God created them, but the Bible says we were all created for God’s pleasure. I couldn’t wrap my own head around the fact that God made me for his pleasure. I am a sinner who doesn’t deserve God’s mercy or grace. How could God get pleasure for my sinful ways? Everyone sins and fall short of God’s glory. However, through Jesus, we can be forgiven of those sins and be cover by his blood sacrifice.

Rev. 4:12 (KJV) “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for Thou has created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

This verse means a lot to me, as someone who truly tries to remember every day to somehow bring God pleasure. I love writing, so I use my talent to try and make sense of my everyday stumbles. Sometimes, I feel like God is right there holding my hand but other times I feel he is distant. However, I truly believe that my sin blocks my relationship with God and I choose to repent. I know I am forgiven when I stumble and fall. He is there to lift me back up, because he loves me.

Psalms 72:13 (KJV) “He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.”

So, now I try to take time to honor God every day. No matter the storm I am facing, I am trying to remember to pray and stay connected with God. I love reading and listening to my Bible, but I use a YOU VERSION app on my phone. I have been learning more and trying to always remember to thank God for each new day that I wake up. I am imperfect and I know that, but God wants me as I am. He can mold me into what he wants me to be with each new step.

**I cannot go to church as regular as I want, but I spend a lot of time praying and seeking God’s guidance in my life. God gives me so much, so I can spend time with God at home and I can work on my failures. I hope this devotional can help you in your walk with God. Keeping a prayer journal can help you learn how to give your problems to God and learn how to pray to him.**

Coming Home

impossible God

You’re the one I look to when my life falls apart,
You have had me in your hands from the start.
My life was bleak when I decided to move away,
So today, I come back home to you and here I will stay.

I know you will accept me, so I don’t feel an ounce of fear,
I am humbled, on my knees, and silently listening to hear.
Where do I go next as I choose to let you guide me,
You are the only the one in this world that can set me free.

Only you know where my life will ultimately lead,
I haven’t forgotten that I gave you my heart and its deed.
I have stumbled through life and looked for guidance from all,
Instead, I found a ton of strength the moment I took my fall.

I will continue to grow in the ways you choose for my life,
Despite the trials and tribulations that will cut like a knife.
Lord, I know you are in control of my life and my future,
Therefore, the peace will replace the temporary sutures.

Nothing Is Impossible With God

Many times we give up too fast and forget that God has given us a destiny to follow using our talents that he has given each of us. Unfortunately, we believe that the road to our dreams may be far off and impossible to obtain. Throughout life, we tend to forget that God can always open doors for us along the path he has laid out for us. However, we must have faith and belief in what God can do for us, as we pursue our dreams.

The first memory verse is: Matthew 19:26-But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, with men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible. (KJV)

Nothing is impossible with God, so take time to get to know him as your heavenly father and strengthen your faith in him. Additionally, begin studying the Holy Bible, which is God’s letter of love to you and your family. You can begin strengthening your faith and your relationship with your heavenly father, by taking time out to study God’s word daily. Studying allows you to learn how God has helped others he loves, as well as learning how he can help you.

Always pray to your heavenly father daily and allow God to handle your burdens, instead of trying to fix them yourself. He can guide you in the ways that will help you succeed in chasing your dreams, but don’t forget about God after you have found your success. Remember, God knows your heart and he can take your success away. Especially, if it begins to separate you from him, because you know that he is a jealous God.

The second memory verse is: Luke 18:27-And he said, the things which are impossible for men are possible with God. (KJV)

Sometimes, you need to be reminded that God has a purpose for you, because you may lose your faith during everyday life. In addition, you tend to move away from God during the good times in our lives and run to him for help during the crisis and trials we may face in our daily lives. Remember that nothing is impossible with God on your side, so walk proud and know the he has a plan for you. Allow him to guide throughout life’s ups and downs, while following the plan that he has created just for you.

Start including God in on every decision you make, by praying first and waiting on his response to you. Knowing God can help you chase your dreams, as well as removing any obstacles which may pop up throughout your journey. Additionally, trust God to provide all that you need to make your dreams come true. No matter what dream God has given you, remember that the he promises that nothing is impossible for him.
