Wings of Hope Project: The New Patient Bags

angel1Do you have different books lying around your house that may uplift someone’s spirit? The books must be in good condition that you would like to give away. Currently, the Laugh at Cancer Support Community has started to collect books, in order to give them out to a local cancer center in Jacksonville, FL. We also give out a “New Patient Bags”, which is filled with different things that the nurses can give away during the month of December.

These books will be given to men, women, and/or children. We are asking you to send all types of books that may be for children and adults. Additionally, I would like to include Bibles with these new patient bags. The patient generally gets brochures, a blanket, A beanie baby or small stuffed animal, a gift bag, figurines, Christmas cards, Christmas stuff, and an inspirational greeting card.

However, we do not give out “Get Well” cards; instead we add “Thinking of You” cards and “Christmas” cards. Volunteers can donate things like: small toys, throw blankets, Bibles, figurines, bookmarks, books, Christmas cards, and greeting cards. I am the founder and I would like to send more cards, but I would need help. Due to the clinic regulations, we give the nurses the “New Patient Bags”.

I am looking forward to getting this project off the ground quickly, so we can gather up enough Christmas gifts for as many patients as we can. These books will be in a box or spread among the clinic waiting room, where patients can pick a book or two to take home and read it. This is a way to help get patients something that may take their mind off their cancer treatment. They can allow their imagination run wild for a short while.

The visitors can also take and return a book, but the patient or caregiver can keep the book. We need bookmarks with inspirational quotes and positive quotes that will help raise a patient’s morale. Maybe, a church or company can help us make this happen, but for now it is in God’s hands. Thank you to all my friends and volunteers, whose help has made the project successful.

We also have been able to give away these new gift bags for their new patients or existing ones. The life of this support community has changed, since we first started in 2004, as a small local support group. In the past years, the Ning.com community was our home, until I could not pay the monthly cost about $30.00 to keep our network that we built. Many members described it as a Facebook for people, who have been touched by cancer.

Although, we tried several different free networks; I ended up staying with Facebook. However, now I would love to build a new private place or discussion board, where members can share their own stories. Additionally, the members may need someone to talk to or just a new friendship; who they can turn to when they are having good times and bad times. Get involved and become a volunteer, you just need to post inspirational stuff.

I also would like to engage the members into conversation, as we grow in the future. I pray for serious volunteers, who want to make a difference and/or a chance to help a person touched by cancer. The volunteers will help us grow into a place that helps patients. Share new article about health, nutrition, and inspirational post and/or pictures. However, please don’t post information about businesses or miracle cures.

Be there for the members, when they choose to talk to you about their journey with cancer’s touch. Any cancer patient can write their story and send it to me; if they would like to become a guest blogger on my blog. I thank you for continuing to be a part of this support community. I personally would like to create a community where all kinds of patients, family, caregivers, and loved ones can tell their story.

Anyone who would like to help build a free private community or discussion board, please email me. I pray that we can cheer up some patients this upcoming Christmas season. Just a quick reminder, that the yearly “Wings of Hope Project” has been changed, from two times a year to once a year in December. We will have a giveaway every year in December, because this will help us collect more gifts to give out to different centers.

We also take and need small donations to buy a few things for this project. We ne need help with things like: gas, coloring books and crayons, and dollar store toys or items that would lift someone’s spirit. The Wings of Hope Project involves making “New Patient Packages”; which different local nurses can give out to their new patients. This way, the patient knows that there is a network of people out here, who cares about what the patient is going through.

If you can help us gather the items we need, please contact me by Facebook Messaging or by email: laughatcancer@gmail.com. Please discuss your donations you plan to send or your intention to volunteer online and off-line with our Facebook community. We will be working on collecting at least “50 New Patient Bags or even more”, which is needed to give out to the different local cancer centers we visit.

Sometimes, we will visit one nursing home and donate every bag we having, which are filled for patients. They need personal items, so fill up a shoebox and mark it by its contents with either: women, man, or child–boy or girl. This helps the facility in gathering up enough gifts, so no patient is left out. When we are visiting a nursing, I will let you know as soon as I know. Help us collect gifts that can be used to cheer patients up, as well as let them know we care.

Thank you for taking the time to think of others, who are fighting for their lives and remember to say a prayer for them. In addition, I want to engage my members, so any thoughts and help are appreciated tremendously. I am collecting items now, so I have more time to receive enough donations of items or a little cash. My revenue from writing is used to keep our community alive and growing, so take time to read the articles I post on my wall or on my Author Crystal S. Kauffman page.

Please contact me, if you are familiar with monetizing my two blogs on Word Press or Blogger. Thank you, in advance for helping us to obtain this goal, by December 15, 2015. Thank for helping us to make cancer patients feel special, and loved by our volunteers. I look forward to chatting with you about the ways, in which you can help us create another successful Wings of Hope Project this year. Last year, we did not get any children’s items, so we need books, paper, and coloring supplies.

Let’s make a difference in the lives of those touched by cancer, who need to feel special on occasions!

Volunteers needed to mail out greeting cards for holidays and important dates like: member’s birthdays, an anniversary of your survivorship, and/or a marriage anniversary. Also, we need someone who would like to post updated health information. This will help members stay informed and will possibly help our expanding community. It would be nice to have a nutritionist or member sharing the best health food website. Furthermore, we need Peer and Spiritual Counselors, for members who may need a shoulder to lean on, so become someone’s Wings of Hope.

Blanket of Hope Project Has Been Canceled

Image

After careful thought and consideration, we have decided to cancel our yearly Blankets of Hope Project”, due to lack of donations and volunteers. Thank you to all who have helped make this project a success for over five years now. Through this project, we have helped many patients and their families, whether at cancer clinic’s or nursing homes. Fortunately, we are going to expand our “Wings of Hope Project”, so we can visit cancer clinics at least four times a year.

We will be planning our visits in the springtime, summer, fall, and one in the winter. The winter visit will be near Christmas time, so the patients will still receive small gifts and greeting cards. Volunteers will be able to donate blankets and other small gifts, as well as donate greeting cards or Christmas cards. Please take a moment to check out our “Wings of Hope Project” and learn ways that you can help us bring a smile to each patient. Thank you to all who have helped us to grow and continue to bless each patient or family we meet.

This project is sponsored by the Laugh at Cancer Support Community.

Learning to Laugh the Cancer Blues Away on a Private Support Community

Image

Jacksonville, FL/Feb. 5, 2014: A private support community has been created to help families who have been touched by cancer in anyway. The networking site Laughatcancer.ning.com has been created to allow patients, survivors, and families to meet other families facing the same devastating diagnosis. However, with the new blossoming friendships and the social networking in this private support community, families will learn how to cope with cancer’s touch.

“The private support community will allow members to share their journey through cancer’s touch,” stated the Founder, Crystal S. Kauffman. She is a cervical cancer 2B survivor of ten years now and has kept the Laugh at Cancer Support Community alive and growing since 2004. She used the networking feature through Facebook to keep the community alive, after leaving Ning.com in 2012. However, she recently decided to return to Ning.com, in order to offer the private networking feature, which will make it easier for member’s to tell their story.

The networking feature will offer families: support, encouragement, and inspiration from volunteers or other members. As of Feb. 4th, 2014, Mrs. Kauffman reopened the private support community and is excited about its future potential.  Every new member will have the opportunity to meet new friends, volunteer in the community, or tell their story to other members. The private support community will allow member honor loved ones, start a discussion, join a group, or keep a daily blog.

In the future, she hopes the private support community will continue to grow, while raising awareness and celebrating the beauty of life. Mrs. Kauffman believes that laughter will help drive the cancer blues away. However, once the members begin networking with each other, friendships will begin to blossom into laughter and love for one another. Therefore, she would like to invite everyone to join us, especially those who have been touched by cancer or want to become a volunteer.

Laugh at Cancer Support Community has Reopened on Ning!

Image

We Are Back!

I am trusting God and reopening the Laugh at Cancer Support Community at Ning.com, due to request from Facebook for a private community. The support community will have a new web address http://laughatcancer.ning.com and all are welcome to join us. Come join us is our mission to offer encouragement, laughter, inspiration, and support to families who need it.

If you were a member in our other support community or are currently a Facebook Page member, please join us at the PRIVATE support community and tell your story. You will meet other, who can be friends and encourage you in your journey.

Furthermore, if you are helping with the fight against cancer, come join us and tell others about your organization. You may create a group within our private community/network. This support community is a networking site for families touched by cancer whether…directly or indirectly! So come join us and help us make a difference by working together.

Volunteers Needed

I will need design volunteers, community volunteers, and help spreading the word about our new support community’s address.  Additionally, I need help gathering “Thinking of You” greeting cards by July 30th of each year for our Wings of Hope Project. Every year, I pass these out at cancer centers and nursing homes, because many patients don’t get visitors and it is nice to know someone cares. If you can help, please contact me, by phone 904-450-3560 or email laughatcancer@gmail.com.

Donations Needed

Honestly, it will cost $30.00 every month and I will need to raise $30.00 by the 14th of each month. Even a little amount will help me to continue keeping this private network or support community open for families touched by this devastating disease. I will need help covering this cost each month, so if you would like to help us keep the community alive and growing. My PayPal email is laughatcancer@gmail.com and you can email me at that address for any other information you may need.

We are not a non-profit organization; instead we are a support community/network that cares about those families touched by cancer. If you are able to help in any way, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. First payment is due Feb. 14th, 2014. Come join us and let’s make a difference together, also contact me if you can volunteer in any way.

Blanket of Hope Project 2013

Blankets of Hope 2013

By Crystal S. Kauffman

This Christmas, help me spread the joy of Christmas cheer to the patients in local nursing, which has many patients. Some patients have no family and would enjoy receiving the small gifts from someone. There are many ways you can help like you can donate signed Christmas cards, small gifts and/or, throw blankets. Items must be donated by Dec. 20, 2013, in order for the nursing home to get them before Christmas Day

Throw Blankets

The blankets are desperately needed, because the patients tend to get the chills and a fleece throw blanket would be perfect on warming the up. The must be a typical sized throw blanket, so it is easy for the patient to carry with them. The blanket will represent all of the people out here thinking about them during the holidays. Please feel free to email me for my address.

Christmas Cards

The Christmas cards should be signed with your family’s name or you may allow everyone to sign it. Children can make homemade cards or they can draw pictures. I am hoping to get enough things to give out to each patient there. Additionally, write Patient on the front and Christmas on the back of the envelope. These cards seem to brighten the patient’s day and are generally inexpensive, since money is tight in this economy.

Small Gifts

The patients love getting small gifts like figurines of any kind. I usually go to the dollar store and get some from there for cheap, but this year I cannot afford to buy them myself. So, if you would like to volunteer and help me gather up some cute small figurines like angels. Most patients love getting an angel for Christmas with a card and a blanket. This shows that there are people out in the world who do care about them, even if they have no family coming to see them.

Volunteering

You can help by donating any of these items. Patients will be thrilled and feel blessed to receive anything that you can donate. Without the kind donations of others helping, the nursing home cannot possibly give something to all of the patients. Let’s make a difference together by bringing a little love and cheer.

Collecting Donations

Currently, we have until Dec. 20th, 2013, in order to collect the donations needed to make this a day that the patients will remember. Please consider helping me bring a little joy into the life of each patient that will receive the gifts on Christmas 2013. This Christmas can be brighter and full of hope, by giving the patient something special that they can use every day.

Care Packages

Other ways you can help is gathering up shoe boxes wrapped and marked male or female. These shoe boxes should be full of personal stuff like deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, powder, shaving supplies, brush or comb, body lotion, perfume or cologne, or other items they may need. If you can help, please contact me by email for more information about this project.

Contact Me for Address

The Laugh at Cancer Support Community is sponsoring this project, but we are not a non-profit. We just care about those who are stuck in a nursing home or hospital during Christmas time and would like the patients to know someone does care. Thank you to all who will be taking the time help with this Blankets of Hope project. Together we can make a difference!
